Sun Solaris 8.0/9.0/10.0 TCP Sequence Number denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Sun Solaris 8.0/9.0/10.0 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component TCP Sequence Number Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

The TCP implementation in Sun Solaris 8, 9, and 10 before 20060726 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (resource exhaustion) via a TCP packet with an incorrect sequence number, which triggers an ACK storm.

The bug was discovered 07/26/2006. The weakness was presented 07/27/2006 by Rene with Sun Microsystems Inc. (Website). The advisory is shared for download at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-3920 since 07/28/2006. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18075 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115713 (Solaris Hosts are induced by an Internet Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) ACK Storm causing Denial of ServiceVulnerability (1000361.1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sunsolve.sun.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (28048), Tenable (18075), OSVDB (27541†), Secunia (SA22425†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1016589†). See VDB-31557 for similar entry. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
