Mozilla Firefox before 1.5.0.5, Thunderbird before 1.5.0.5, and SeaMonkey before 1.0.3 allows remote attackers to reference remote files and possibly load chrome: URLs by tricking the user into copying or dragging links.
The weakness was disclosed 07/25/2006 by Benjamin Smedberg (moz_bug_r_a4) with Mozilla as MFSA2006-56 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-3812 since 07/24/2006. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22162 (CentOS 3 : seamonkey (CESA-2006:0608)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117672 (CentOS Security Update for SeaMonkey (CESA-2006:0608)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4326.
