A vulnerability has been found in Mozilla Firefox 1.5/1.5.0.1/1.5.0.2/1.5.0.3/1.5.0.4 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component XPCOM Event Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Mozilla Firefox 1.5 before 1.5.0.5, Thunderbird before 1.5.0.5, and SeaMonkey before 1.0.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via simultaneous XPCOM events, which causes a timer object to be deleted in a way that triggers memory corruption.
The weakness was presented 07/25/2006 by Benjamin Smedberg (moz_bug_r_a4) with Secunia Research as MFSA2006-46 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-3113 since 06/21/2006. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22097 (SeaMonkey < 1.0.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117662 (CentOS Security Update for Firefox (CESA-2006:0610)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
