A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox 1.5/1.5.0.1/1.5.0.2/1.5.0.3/1.5.0.4 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function document.getElementById of the component JavaScript. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer coercion vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-192. Integer coercion refers to a set of flaws pertaining to the type casting, extension, or truncation of primitive data types. Mozilla Firefox before 1.5.0.5, Thunderbird before 1.5.0.5, and SeaMonkey before 1.0.3 allows remote attackers to hijack native DOM methods from objects in another domain and conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks using DOM methods of the top-level object.
The weakness was shared 07/25/2006 by Thor Larholm (moz_bug_r_a4) with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative as MFSA2006-47 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-3802 since 07/24/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22162 (CentOS 3 : seamonkey (CESA-2006:0608)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117662 (CentOS Security Update for Firefox (CESA-2006:0610)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4326.
