Details
A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox 1.5/1.5.0.1/1.5.0.2/1.5.0.3/1.5.0.4 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown processing of the component JavaScript. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Mozilla Firefox 1.5 before 1.5.0.5, Thunderbird before 1.5.0.5, and SeaMonkey before 1.0.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via simultaneous XPCOM events, which causes a timer object to be deleted in a way that triggers memory corruption.
The weakness was published 07/25/2006 by H. D. Moore with MetaSploit as MFSA2006-48 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-3113 since 06/21/2006. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22097 (SeaMonkey < 1.0.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117662 (CentOS Security Update for Firefox (CESA-2006:0610)).
