Mozilla Firefox 1.5 before 1.5.0.5 and SeaMonkey before 1.0.3 does not properly clear a JavaScript reference to a frame or window, which leaves a pointer to a deleted object that allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary native code.

The weakness was released 07/25/2006 by Thilo Girmann (moz_bug_r_a4) with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative as MFSA2006-44 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-3801 since 07/24/2006. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27435 (openSUSE 10 Security Update : seamonkey (seamonkey-1952)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117662 (CentOS Security Update for Firefox (CESA-2006:0610)).

Upgrading to version 1.5.0.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4326.
