the bluez_sock_create function in the bluetooth stack for linux kernel 2.4.6 through 2.4.30-rc1 and 2.6 through 2.6.11.5 allows local users to gain privileges via (1) socket or (2) socketpair call with a negative protocol value.
The bug was discovered 03/27/2005. The weakness was shared 03/27/2005 by Ilja van Sprundel with Suresec (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at marc.info. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-0750 since 03/17/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17982 (SUSE-SA:2005:021: kernel), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
