Sign extension vulnerability in the createBrushIndirect function in the GDI library (gdi32.dll) in Microsoft Windows XP, Server 2003, and possibly other versions, allows user-assisted attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted WMF file.

The issue has been introduced in 02/17/2000. The weakness was released 08/07/2006 by cyanid-E (Website). The advisory is available at lists.grok.org.uk. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-4071 since 08/09/2006. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by cyanid-E and been published 6 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at lists.grok.org.uk. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2363 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
