Microsoft Windows 2000/Server 2003/XP RPC ELV memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Microsoft Windows 2000/Server 2003/XP (Operating System). Affected is an unknown functionality of the component RPC. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability (ELV). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in the Server Service in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP1 and SP2, and Server 2003 SP1 allows remote attackers, including anonymous users, to execute arbitrary code via a crafted RPC message, a different vulnerability than CVE-2006-1314.

The issue has been introduced in 02/17/2000. The weakness was published 08/08/2006 with US-CERT und SANS as MS06-040 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-3439 since 07/07/2006. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

After 2 weeks, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at saintcorporation.com. It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2364 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22194 (MS06-040: Vulnerability in Server Service Could Allow Remote Code Execution (921883) (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90336 (Vulnerability in Server Service Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS06-040)).

Applying the patch MS06-040 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 7210. In this case the pattern |04 00| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4616.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (28002), Exploit-DB (2223), Zero-Day.cz (395), Tenable (22194) and SecurityFocus (BID 19409†).
