Novell GroupWise 6.5/7 WebAccess cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Novell GroupWise 6.5/7 (Groupware Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component WebAccess. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Novell GroupWise WebAccess 6.5 and 7 before 20060727 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via an encoded SCRIPT element in an e-mail message with the UTF-7 character set, as demonstrated by the "+ADw-SCRIPT+AD4-" sequence.

The bug was discovered 05/26/2006. The weakness was presented 08/08/2006 by Jerome Odegaard and Francisco Amato with Infobyte Security Research (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.novell.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-3817 since 07/24/2006. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

After before and not just, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 74 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.novell.com.
