A logic error in the CRAM-MD5 code for the University of Washington IMAP (UW-IMAP) server, when Challenge-Response Authentication Mechanism with MD5 (CRAM-MD5) is enabled, does not properly enforce all the required conditions for successful authentication, which allows remote attackers to authenticate as arbitrary users.
The bug was discovered 01/27/2005. The weakness was disclosed 05/02/2005 by Mark Crispin as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-0198 since 01/31/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation.
