University of Washington UW-IMAP Authentication Mechanism improper authentication

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in University of Washington UW-IMAP (version unknown) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component Authentication Mechanism. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-287. When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

A logic error in the CRAM-MD5 code for the University of Washington IMAP (UW-IMAP) server, when Challenge-Response Authentication Mechanism with MD5 (CRAM-MD5) is enabled, does not properly enforce all the required conditions for successful authentication, which allows remote attackers to authenticate as arbitrary users.

The bug was discovered 01/27/2005. The weakness was disclosed 05/02/2005 by Mark Crispin as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-0198 since 01/31/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16439 (GLSA-200502-02 : UW IMAP: CRAM-MD5 authentication bypass), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (19120), Tenable (16439), SecurityFocus (BID 12391†), OSVDB (13242†) and Secunia (SA14057†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
