Details
A vulnerability was found in ngIRCd up to 0.8.1. It has been classified as critical. This affects the function lists_makemask of the file lists.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Integer underflow in the Lists_MakeMask() function in lists.c in ngIRCd before 0.8.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a long MODE line that causes an incorrect length calculation, which leads to a buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 01/28/2005. The weakness was presented 05/02/2005 (Website). The advisory is shared at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-0199 since 01/31/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16274 (ngIRCd < 0.8.2 Lists_MakeMask() Remote Overflow DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gain a shell remotely and running in the context r.
Upgrading to version 0.8.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (19143), Exploit-DB (25070), Tenable (16274), SecurityFocus (BID 12397†) and OSVDB (13300†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
