A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 6 (Web Browser). Affected is some unknown processing of the component Script Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a remote code execution vulnerability. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 and 6 does not properly identify the originating domain zone when handling redirects, which allows remote attackers to read cross-domain web pages and possibly execute code via unspecified vectors involving a crafted web page, aka "Source Element Cross-Domain Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 08/08/2006 by Will Dormann with Microsoft as MS06-042 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-3639 since 07/17/2006. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22184 (MS06-042: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (918899)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100036 (Microsoft Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS06-042)).
Applying the patch MS06-042 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published 3 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4593.
