Cross-domain vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 allows remote attackers to access restricted information from other domains via an object tag with a data parameter that references a link on the attacker s originating site that specifies a Location HTTP header that references the target site, which then makes that content available through the outerHTML attribute of the object, aka "Redirect Cross-Domain Information Disclosure Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 08/08/2006 by Plebo Aesdi Nael with Microsoft as MS06-042 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-3280 since 06/28/2006. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22184 (MS06-042: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (918899)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100036 (Microsoft Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS06-042)).
Applying the patch MS06-042 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4593.
