A vulnerability has been found in Apache HTTP Server up to 2.2.3 on Windows (Web Server) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component mod_alias. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. Apache 2.2.2, when running on Windows, allows remote attackers to read source code of CGI programs via a request that contains uppercase (or alternate case) characters that bypass the case-sensitive ScriptAlias directive, but allow access to the file on case-insensitive file systems.
The bug was discovered 08/08/2006. The weakness was disclosed 08/11/2006 by Susam Pal with Infosys Technologies Ltd. as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-4110 since 08/14/2006. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at downloads.securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22203 (Apache on Windows mod_alias URL Validation Canonicalization CGI Source Disclosure), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 87269 (Apache CGI Script Source Code Information Disclosure Vulnerability).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at httpd.apache.org.
