SAP Internet Graphics Service up to 7.00 HTTP Request heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in SAP Internet Graphics Service up to 7.00 and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component HTTP Request Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

Heap-based buffer overflow in SAP Internet Graphics Service (IGS) 6.40 and earlier, and 7.00 and earlier, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or execute arbitrary code via an HTTP request with an ADM:GETLOGFILE command and a long portwatcher argument, which triggers the overflow during error message construction when the _snprintf function returns a negative value that is used in a memcpy operation.

The bug was discovered 06/02/2006. The weakness was presented 08/11/2006 by Mariano Nuñez Di Croce with Cybsec (Website). The advisory is shared at cybsec.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-4133 since 08/14/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 70 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sap.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (28334), SecurityFocus (BID 19470†), OSVDB (27915†), Secunia (SA21448†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1017534†).
