A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.0 (Web Browser). This issue affects some unknown processing of the component XSLT. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality. Firefox before 1.0.1 and Mozilla before 1.7.6 does not restrict xsl:include and xsl:import tags in XSLT stylesheets to the current domain, which allows remote attackers to determine the existence of files on the local system.

The bug was discovered 03/01/2005. The weakness was disclosed 05/02/2005 by Georgi Guninski (taviso) with Mozilla as Bug 271209 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-0588 since 02/28/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 58 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21930 (CentOS 3 : mozilla (CESA-2005:384)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117973 (CentOS Security Update for Mozilla (CESA-2005:384)).

Upgrading to version 1.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
