RealNetworks RealPlayer 8.0/10.0/10.5 heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in RealNetworks RealPlayer 8.0/10.0/10.5 (Multimedia Player Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in RealNetworks RealPlayer 10.5 (6.0.12.1056 and earlier), 10, 8, and RealOne Player V2 and V1, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via .WAV files.

The bug was discovered 03/02/2005. The weakness was presented 05/02/2005 by Mark Litchfield with NGSSoftware (Website). The advisory is available at redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-0611 since 03/02/2005. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19116 (FreeBSD : realplayer -- remote heap overflow (c73305ae-8cd7-11d9-9873-000a95bc6fae)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38413 (Real Player SMIL File Remote Stack Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9046.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (19549), Tenable (19116), SecurityFocus (BID 12697†), OSVDB (14306†) and Secunia (SA14456†). See VDB-1263 and VDB-1262 for similar entries. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
