Linux Kernel NVMe driver nvmet_tcp_execute_request null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel. It has been classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function nvmet_tcp_execute_request of the component NVMe driver. The manipulation leads to null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2023-6535. The attack can be initiated remotely. There is not any exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (unknown version). This issue affects the function nvmet_tcp_execute_request of the component NVMe driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's NVMe driver. This issue may allow an unauthenticated malicious actor to send a set of crafted TCP packages when using NVMe over TCP, leading the NVMe driver to a NULL pointer dereference in the NVMe driver, causing kernel panic and a denial of service.

The weakness was released 12/12/2023. It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-6535 since 12/05/2023. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/02/2025).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 212625 (EulerOS 2.0 SP12 : kernel (EulerOS-SA-2024-2953)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (212625) and EUVD (EUVD-2023-58766). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
