A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 6 on Win 2000 (Web Browser). Affected is an unknown function of the component HTTP 1.1 Compression Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Heap-based buffer overflow in URLMON.DLL in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1 on Windows 2000 and XP SP1, with versions the MS06-042 patch before 20060824, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or execute arbitrary code via a long URL on a website that uses HTTP 1.1 compression.
The weakness was presented 08/23/2006 by Dejan Kovacevic and Derek Soeder with Bold Internet Solutions und eEye Digital Security as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-3869 since 07/26/2006. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100037 (Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS06-042 and KB923762)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.microsoft.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13775.
