Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.12 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function store. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
The (1) it87 and (2) via686a drivers in I2C for Linux 2.6.x before 2.6.11.8, and 2.6.12 before 2.6.12-rc2, create the sysfs "alarms" file with write permissions, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) by attempting to write to the file, which does not have an associated store function.
The issue has been introduced in 12/18/2003. The weakness was disclosed 05/02/2005 by ERNE (Website). The advisory is shared at kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-1369 since 05/02/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 501 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18598 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDKSA-2005:110)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 2.6.x eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
