Linux Kernel up to 2.6.11 setsid race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-0178. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. No exploit exists. Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.11 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function setsid. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Race condition in the setsid function in Linux before 2.6.8.1 allows local users to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly access portions of kernel memory, related to TTY changes, locking, and semaphores.

The bug was discovered 02/15/2005. The weakness was disclosed 02/15/2005 by Michael Kerrisk with Ubuntu Linux (Website). The advisory is shared for download at ubuntulinux.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-0178 since 01/28/2005. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18598 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDKSA-2005:110)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115055 (Linux Kernel Multiple Vulnerabilities (RHSA-2005:092-14)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (19362), Tenable (18598), SecurityFocus (BID 12598†), OSVDB (13849†) and Secunia (SA14295†). The entries VDB-1048, VDB-1047, VDB-1049 and VDB-1046 are pretty similar. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
