ce Ceterm up to 2.5.4 ce/ceterm symlink

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in ce Ceterm up to 2.5.4. It has been declared as problematic. Affected is an unknown function of the file ce/ceterm. Executing a manipulation can lead to symlink. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-1396. Furthermore, there is an exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in ce Ceterm up to 2.5.4 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the file ce/ceterm. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:

Race condition in Ce/Ceterm (aka ARPUS/Ce) 2.5.4 and earlier allows local users to write to arbitrary files via a symlink attack on the ce_edit_log temporary file.

The bug was discovered 04/20/2005. The weakness was shared 04/30/2005 by Kevin Finisterre (kf_lists) (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.grok.org.uk. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-1396 since 05/02/2005. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in Perl and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 10 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (20359), Exploit-DB (974), SecurityFocus (BID 13461†), OSVDB (16050†) and Secunia (SA15197†). The entry VDB-25023 is related to this item. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
