Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Microsoft Publisher 2000/2002/2003 (Image Processing Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component PUB File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in Microsoft Publisher 2000 through 2003 allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted PUB file, which causes an overflow when parsing fonts.
The bug was discovered 08/03/2005. The weakness was released 09/12/2006 by Stuart Pearson (ERRor) with Computer Terrorism as MS06-054 as not defined bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-0001 since 11/09/2005. The attack can only be done within the local network. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 405 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22334 (MS06-054: Vulnerability in Microsoft Publisher Could Allow Remote Code Execution (910729)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110042 (Microsoft Publisher Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS06-054)).
Applying the patch MS06-054 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 8478.
