Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Indexing Service in Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003, when the Encoding option is set to Auto Select, allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via a UTF-7 encoded URL, which is injected into an error message whose charset is set to UTF-7.
The bug was discovered 09/12/2006. The weakness was disclosed 09/12/2006 by Eiji James Yoshida as MS06-053 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-0032 since 11/30/2005. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS06-053 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 8349. In this case the pattern default.idq is used for detection.
