A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Adobe Flash Player up to 9.0.16.0 (Multimedia Player Software). This affects an unknown part. Microsoft Excel allows user-assisted attackers to execute arbitrary javascript and redirect users to arbitrary sites via an Excel spreadsheet with an embedded Shockwave Flash Player ActiveX Object, which is automatically executed when the user opens the spreadsheet.
The bug was discovered 05/03/2006. The weakness was presented 09/12/2006 by Stuart Pearson (ERRor) with Computer Terrorism UK Ltd (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at adobe.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-3014 since 06/13/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 49 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at adobe.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 7025. In this case the pattern n|DB 7C D2|m|AE CF 11 96 B8|DEST|00 00| is used for detection.
