Details
A vulnerability has been found in GNU C Library (Software Library) (affected version not known) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function __vsyslog_internal. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was released 01/31/2024. The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2023-6246 since 11/21/2023. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/01/2025).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 239976 (TencentOS Server 4: glibc (TSSA-2024:0581)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (239976) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-0246). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.

Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.

Why is the attack vector Network since the vulnerability cannot be activated remotely and it is an LPE? The program that calls the syslog() function must have a very long name (argv [0]) or identifier (ident). A remote attacker has no control over these parameters.
Thanks for the support.
Best Regards.
