A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X Server 10.4.x (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function launchd_server_init of the component launchd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is integrity. CVE summarizes:
launchd 106 in Apple Mac OS X 10.4.x up to 10.4.1 allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on the socket file in an insecure temporary directory.
The bug was discovered 06/08/2005. The weakness was disclosed 06/02/2005 by Neil Archibald and Ilja van Sprundel with Core (Website). The advisory is available at lists.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-1725 since 05/24/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack.
