Todd Miller sudo up to 1.6.8 P8 symlink

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Todd Miller sudo (Operating System Utility Software). Affected is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Race condition in sudo 1.3.1 up to 1.6.8p8, when the ALL pseudo-command is used after a user entry in the sudoers file, allows local users to gain privileges via a symlink attack.

The bug was discovered 01/01/2004. The weakness was disclosed 06/21/2005 by Charles A. Morris as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-1993 since 06/20/2005. The exploitability is told to be difficult. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at rst.void.ru. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 536 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20249 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2005-009)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115305 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2005-009 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2005-11-29)).

A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3892.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (21080), Tenable (20249), SecurityFocus (BID 13993†), OSVDB (17396†) and Secunia (SA15744†). The entries VDB-1813, VDB-1846, VDB-1844 and VDB-1850 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
