A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01/6 (Web Browser). It has been declared as critical. Internet Explorer 5.01 SP4 up to 6 on various Windows operating systems, including IE 6.0.2900.2180 on Windows XP, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a web page with embedded CLSIDs that reference certain COM objects that are not ActiveX controls, as demonstrated using the JVIEW Profiler (Javaprxy.dll). NOTE: the researcher says that the vendor could not reproduce this problem.
The bug was discovered 06/17/2005. The weakness was presented 06/29/2005 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-2087. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a exploit are known.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3619.
