The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Microsoft IIS 5.0 and 6.0 allows remote attackers to poison the web cache, bypass web application firewall protection, and conduct XSS attacks via an HTTP request with both a "Transfer-Encoding: chunked" header and a Content-Length header, which causes IIS to incorrectly handle and forward the body of the request in a way that causes the receiving server to process it as a separate HTTP request, aka "HTTP Request Smuggling."
The issue has been introduced in 02/17/2000. The weakness was shared 07/05/2005 (Website). The advisory is shared at watchfire.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-2089 since 06/30/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation.
