Details
A vulnerability was found in Cacti up to 0.8.6e (Log Management Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function get_request_var of the file graph_image.php. The manipulation of the argument _request with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Cacti 0.8.6e and earlier does not perform proper input validation to protect against common attacks, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands or SQL by sending a legitimate value in a POST request or cookie, then specifying the attack string in the URL, which causes the get_request_var function to return the wrong value in the $_REQUEST variable, which is cleansed while the original malicious $_GET value remains unmodified, as demonstrated in (1) graph_image.php and (2) graph.php.
The bug was discovered 06/26/2005. The weakness was disclosed 07/06/2005 by Stefan Esser with Hardened PHP Project (Website). The advisory is available at hardened-php.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-2148 since 07/06/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:graph_image.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18619 (Cacti < 0.8.6f Authentication Bypass Vulnerability), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (21266), Tenable (18619), SecurityFocus (BID 14129†), OSVDB (17720†) and Secunia (SA15490†).
