A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 6 (Web Browser). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function setSlice of the component ActiveX WebViewFolderIcon. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Integer overflow in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP SP2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and execute arbitrary code via a 0x7fffffff argument to the setSlice method on a WebViewFolderIcon ActiveX object, which leads to an invalid memory copy.
The weakness was disclosed 09/28/2006 by H. D. Moore with MetaSploit (Website). The advisory is shared for download at browserfun.blogspot.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-3730 since 07/19/2006. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
A public exploit has been developed by H D Moore and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at metasploit.com. It is declared as attacked. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22530 (MS06-057: Vulnerability in Windows Explorer Could Allow Remote Execution (923191)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90352 (Microsoft Windows Explorer Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS06-057)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 7985. In this case the pattern E5DF9D10-3B52-11D1-83E8-00A0C90DC849 is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4563.
