phpMyAdmin up to 2.9.0 Dev cross-site request forgery

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in phpMyAdmin up to 2.9.0 Dev (Database Administration Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross-site request forgery vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-352. The web application does not, or can not, sufficiently verify whether a well-formed, valid, consistent request was intentionally provided by the user who submitted the request. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple cross-site request forgery (CSRF) vulnerabilities in phpMyAdmin before 2.9.1-rc1 allow remote attackers to perform unauthorized actions as another user by (1) directly setting a token in the URL though dynamic variable evaluation and (2) unsetting arbitrary variables via the _REQUEST array, related to (a) libraries/common.lib.php, (b) session.inc.php, and (c) url_generating.lib.php. NOTE: the PHP unset function vector is covered by CVE-2006-3017.

The weakness was presented 09/28/2006 by Sebastian Mendel, Stefan Esser and Michael Heimpol (Website). The advisory is shared at us.debian.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-5116 since 10/02/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22512 (phpMyAdmin < 2.9.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165118 (SUSE Security Update for phpMyAdmin (SUSE-SA:2006:071)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at phpmyadmin.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (29301), Tenable (22512), SecurityFocus (BID 20253†), OSVDB (30141†) and Secunia (SA22126†).
