Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in OpenSSL (Network Encryption Software). Affected is an unknown code block of the component ASN.1 Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
OpenSSL 0.9.7 before 0.9.7l and 0.9.8 before 0.9.8d allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop and memory consumption) via malformed ASN.1 structures that trigger an improperly handled error condition.
The bug was discovered 09/28/2006. The weakness was shared 09/28/2006 by Dr. S. N. Henson with Open Network Security (Website). The advisory is available at openssl.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-2937 since 06/09/2006. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1367 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22727 (Debian DSA-1185-2 : openssl - denial of service), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185040 (HP-UX Running OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX02174)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at openssl.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5077.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (29228), Tenable (22727), SecurityFocus (BID 28276†), OSVDB (29260†) and Secunia (SA31531†).
