Summary
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in OpenSSL. This vulnerability affects unknown code of the component SSLv2 Client. Performing a manipulation results in null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2006-4343. Moreover, an exploit is present. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in OpenSSL (Network Encryption Software). This affects an unknown functionality of the component SSLv2 Client. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
The get_server_hello function in the SSLv2 client code in OpenSSL 0.9.7 before 0.9.7l, 0.9.8 before 0.9.8d, and earlier versions allows remote servers to cause a denial of service (client crash) via unknown vectors that trigger a null pointer dereference.
The bug was discovered 09/28/2006. The weakness was disclosed 09/28/2006 by Tavis Ormandy and Will Drewry with Google Security Team (Website). The advisory is shared at openssl.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-4343 since 08/24/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1367 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 45039 (OpenSSL < 0.9.8m Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185030 (HP-UX Running OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX02174)).
Upgrading to version 0.9.7l eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at openssl.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5077.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (29240), Exploit-DB (4773), Tenable (45039), SecurityFocus (BID 20246†) and OSVDB (29263†). Further details are available at news.com.com. The entries VDB-1786, VDB-1803, VDB-1858 and VDB-1857 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
