Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in OpenSSL (Network Encryption Software). Affected by this issue is the function SSL_get_shared_ciphers. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in the SSL_get_shared_ciphers function in OpenSSL 0.9.7 before 0.9.7l, 0.9.8 before 0.9.8d, and earlier versions has unspecified impact and remote attack vectors involving a long list of ciphers.
The bug was discovered 09/27/2007. The weakness was released 09/28/2006 by Tavis Ormandy and Will Drewry with Google Security Team (Website). The advisory is shared for download at openssl.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-3738 since 07/20/2006. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 01/13/2025).
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1367 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 26950 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : openssl (MDKSA-2007:193)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185030 (HP-UX Running OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX02174)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at openssl.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 8426. In this case the pattern |01 00 02| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5077.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (29237), Tenable (26950), SecurityFocus (BID 20249†), OSVDB (29262†) and Secunia (SA30161†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-1786, VDB-1803, VDB-1858 and VDB-1857. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
