A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.0.4 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the file installversion.compareto. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. Firefox before 1.0.5, Mozilla before 1.7.9, and Netscape 8.0.2 and 7.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (access violation and crash), and possibly execute arbitrary code, by calling InstallVersion.compareTo with an object instead of a string.
The weakness was published 07/13/2005 by Matthew Mastracci (moz_bug_r_a4) as MFSA2005-50 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-2265 since 07/13/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation.
