A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.0.4 (Web Browser). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown part of the component Same Origin Policy. Firefox before 1.0.5 and Mozilla before 1.7.9 allows a child frame to call top.focus and other methods in a parent frame, even when the parent is in a different domain, which violates the same origin policy and allows remote attackers to steal sensitive information such as cookies and passwords from web sites whose child frames do not verify that they are in the same domain as their parents.
The weakness was released 07/13/2005 by Matthew Mastracci (moz_bug_r_a4) as MFSA2005-52 as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-2266 since 07/13/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21949 (CentOS 4 : firefox (CESA-2005:586)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117890 (CentOS Security Update for Mozilla (CESA-2005:587)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3377.
