Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.19-rc1 s390 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function copy_from_user of the component s390 Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a uninitialized resource vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-908. The product uses or accesses a resource that has not been initialized. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
The copy_from_user function in the uaccess code in Linux kernel 2.6 before 2.6.19-rc1, when running on s390, does not properly clear a kernel buffer, which allows local user space programs to read portions of kernel memory by "appending to a file from a bad address," which triggers a fault that prevents the unused memory from being cleared in the kernel buffer.
The bug was discovered 10/04/2006. The weakness was shared 10/06/2006 by Martin Schwidefsky with IBM (Website). The advisory is shared at kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-5174 since 10/05/2006. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22879 (CentOS 3 : kernel (CESA-2006:0710)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115509 (Red Hat Kernel Security Update (RHSA-2007:0014)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (29378), Tenable (22879), SecurityFocus (BID 20379†), OSVDB (29537†) and Secunia (SA22289†). The entries VDB-2551, VDB-2647, VDB-2661 and VDB-2714 are related to this item. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
