Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.18 on IA64 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function sys_perfmon. The manipulation as part of a File Descriptor leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
The perfmonctl system call (sys_perfmonctl) in Linux kernel 2.4.x and 2.6 before 2.6.18, when running on Itanium systems, does not properly track the reference count for file descriptors, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (file descriptor consumption).
The bug was discovered 10/06/2006. The weakness was published 10/06/2006 by Stephane Eranian with HP (Website). The advisory is available at kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-3741 since 07/20/2006. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23846 (Debian DSA-1233-1 : kernel-source-2.6.8 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156246 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel (ELSA-2006:0617, ELSA-2006:0689)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (29384), Tenable (23846), SecurityFocus (BID 20361†), OSVDB (29538†) and Secunia (SA23474†).
