The (a) NAVENG (NAVENG.SYS) and (b) NAVEX15 (NAVEX15.SYS) device drivers 20061.3.0.12 and later, as used in Symantec AntiVirus and security products, allow local users to gain privileges by overwriting critical system addresses using a crafted Irp to the IOCTL functions (1) 0x222AD3, (2) 0x222AD7, and (3) 0x222ADB.
The bug was discovered 10/05/2006. The weakness was released 10/06/2006 by Rubén Santamarta (iDefense) with iDEFENSE (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at idefense.com. The public release was coordinated with Symantec. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-4927 since 09/22/2006. The attack can only be done within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at symantec.com.
