Sun Solaris 10.0 Netscape Portable Runtime input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Sun Solaris 10.0 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Netscape Portable Runtime. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The Netscape Portable Runtime (NSPR) API 4.6.1 and 4.6.2, as used in Sun Solaris 10, trusts user-specified environment variables for specifying log files even when running from setuid programs, which allows local users to create or overwrite arbitrary files.

The bug was discovered 10/11/2006. The weakness was shared 10/12/2006 by iDefense with iDEFENSE Labs (Website). The advisory is shared at labs.idefense.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-4842 since 09/15/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

The exploit is available at immunitysec.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 261 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20052 (Solaris 10 (sparc) : 119213-36 (deprecated)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115443 (Sun Solaris Netscape Portable Runtime API Local Privilege Escalation Vulnerability).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sunsolve.sun.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (29489), Exploit-DB (45433), Tenable (20052), SecurityFocus (BID 20471†) and OSVDB (29610†). The entries VDB-82, VDB-332, VDB-333 and VDB-427 are related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
