Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.0 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a deadlock vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-833. The product contains multiple threads or executable segments that are waiting for each other to release a necessary lock, resulting in deadlock. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Race condition in Linux 2.6, when threads are sharing memory mapping via CLONE_VM (such as linuxthreads and vfork), might allow local users to cause a denial of service (deadlock) by triggering a core dump while waiting for a thread that has just performed an exec.
The issue has been introduced in 12/18/2003. The weakness was presented 09/30/2005 (Website). The advisory is available at linux.bkbits.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-3106 since 09/30/2005. The exploitation appears to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 652 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21977 (CentOS 4 : kernel (CESA-2006:0101)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117768 (CentOS Security Update for Kernel (CESA-2006:0101)).
