Mod Auth Shadow up to 1.0 mod_auth_shadow Remote Code Execution

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a remote code execution vulnerability. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The mod_auth_shadow module 1.0 through 1.5 and 2.0 for Apache with AuthShadow enabled uses shadow authentication for all locations that use the require group directive, even when other authentication mechanisms are specified, which might allow remote authenticated users to bypass security restrictions.

The bug was discovered 08/05/2005. The weakness was presented 10/05/2005 by David Herselman (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at debian.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-2963 since 09/19/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.

After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 61 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20126 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : apache-mod_auth_shadow (MDKSA-2005:200)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (22520), Tenable (20126), SecurityFocus (BID 15224†), OSVDB (19863†) and Secunia (SA17060†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
