Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in University of Washington UW-IMAP up to 2004f. Affected is the function mail_valid_net_parse_work of the file mail.c of the component IMAP Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in the mail_valid_net_parse_work function in mail.c for Washington s IMAP Server (UW-IMAP) before imap-2004g allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a mailbox name containing a single double-quote (") character without a closing quote, which causes bytes after the double-quote to be copied into a buffer indefinitely.
The bug was discovered 10/04/2005. The weakness was shared 10/13/2005 by infamous41md as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-2933 since 09/15/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19969 (Debian DSA-861-1 : uw-imap - buffer overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117716 (CentOS Security Update for PHP (CESA-2006:0501)).
