A vulnerability was found in PHP 4.4.2/5.1.2 (Programming Language Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function tempnam. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-79. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in phpinfo (info.c) in PHP 5.1.2 and 4.4.2 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via long array variables, including (1) a large number of dimensions or (2) long values, which prevents HTML tags from being removed.
The weakness was disclosed 04/10/2006 by Maksymilian Arciemowicz (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityreason.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-0996 since 03/06/2006. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21281 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : php (MDKSA-2006:074)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117716 (CentOS Security Update for PHP (CESA-2006:0501)).
Upgrading to version 4.4.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at php.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
