Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.72/5.14.11. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function single_open of the component nv50. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/nouveau/kms/nv50-: fix file release memory leak When using single_open() for opening, single_release() should be called, otherwise the 'op' allocated in single_open() will be leaked.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2021-47422 since 05/21/2024. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 5.10.73 or 5.14.12 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 65fff0a8efcd/0b4e9fc14973/0b3d4945cc7e is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1197). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
