A vulnerability was found in OpenLDAP up to 2.2.29 (Directory Service Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component BIND Request Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. OpenLDAP before 2.3.29 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) via LDAP BIND requests with long authcid names, which triggers an assertion failure.
The bug was discovered 11/06/2006. The weakness was disclosed 11/07/2006 by Evgeny Legerov (Website). The advisory is available at openldap.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-5779 since 11/07/2006. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl Module. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23747 (GLSA-200611-25 : OpenLDAP: Denial of Service vulnerability), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165119 (SUSE Security Update for openldap2-client (SUSE-SA:2006:072)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at openldap.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8576.
