Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.x (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component IPv6 Fragmentation Handler. The manipulation as part of a IP Fragment leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
ip6_tables in netfilter in the Linux kernel before 2.6.16.31 allows remote attackers to (1) bypass a rule that disallows a protocol, via a packet with the protocol header not located immediately after the fragment header, aka "ip6_tables protocol bypass bug;" and (2) bypass a rule that looks for a certain extension header, via a packet with an extension header outside the first fragment, aka "ip6_tables extension header bypass bug."
The bug was discovered 10/24/2006. The weakness was presented 11/07/2006 by Marc Dowd with McAfee (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-4572 since 09/06/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 10 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 28005 (Ubuntu 5.10 / 6.06 LTS / 6.10 : linux-source-2.6.12/2.6.15/2.6.17 vulnerabilities (USN-416-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165110 (SUSE Security Update for Kernel (SUSE-SA:2006:079)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (30065), Tenable (28005), SecurityFocus (BID 20955†), OSVDB (30066†) and Secunia (SA24098†). kernel.org is providing further details.
